We’ve seen Lil Kim go through various image changes over the years and in the past she’s openly discussed how harmful competing with European beauty standards has been to her self-esteem.
In a newly-released video posted to her fan page Lil’ Kim Royal, Kim can be seen speaking to someone behind the camera about her ethnic identity.
“You know, I’m a Spanish girl trapped in a Black girl’s body,” she says jokingly. “But I’m all mixed up.”
Kim then starts singing a song in Spanish.
It’s unclear when the video was taken and while it appears Kim’s having a little fun in the clip, her ‘all mixed up’ statement does fall in line with some of what she’s said previously.
In 2000, she told Newsweek:
“I have low self-esteem and I always have. Guys always cheated on me with women who were European-looking. You know, the long-hair type. Really beautiful women that left me thinking, ‘How I can I compete with that?’ Being a regular black girl wasn’t good enough.”
