Well, here’s a plot twist we weren’t expecting.
While the rest of Black culture is upset at H&M for putting a Black boy in a hoodie that reads ‘Coolest Monkey in the Jungle,’ the little boys mother is not.
Her name is Terry Mango and she doesn’t understand why everyone is outraged.
After the offensive photo began making rounds, a lot of people questioned where the child’s mother was when the company decided to put him in this hoodie. Some argued that she probably wasn’t around, while others accused the brand of photoshopping the shirt on the boy after the shoot was done.
As it turns out, Terry was present during the shoot and watched as her son dressed in the outfit.
She took to Instagram to address the situation:
“[I] am the mum, and this is one of hundreds of outfits my son has modeled. Stop crying wolf all the time, [it’s] an unnecessary issue here. Get over it.. That’s my son, [I’ve] been to all photoshoots and this was not an exception. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about this… I really don’t understand but not [because I’m] choosing not to, but because it’s not my way of thinking. Sorry.”
Let’s keep in mind that Terry and her son are from a different country — a country that doesn’t share America’s same history with racism. It could be that she truly doesn’t understand the racist connotations around the word ‘monkey’ and Black people in America.
Even still, someone over at H&M most likely did and allowed it to happen.
