World AIDS Day: Go Out and Get Tested

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

An estimated 33.3 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV. World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education. B. Scott Bites: Roasted Butternut Squash and Red Onion Pasta Salad

Butternut Squash and Red Onion Penne - The Duo Dishes

We hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday weekend! Maybe you’re tired of all the leftovers by now? We don’t blame you. If you want to break away from the turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches, try this fall-inspired pasta salad. It features butternut squash, which usually finds itself as the base for soups.

There are many ways to eat butternut squash, but one of our favorite preparations is roasting. The natural sweetness of the vegetable really comes out after a trip in the oven. Roasted butternut squash and red onion combine with fresh basil in a light lemon cream sauce for a quick pasta dish that is great for dinner one night and lunch the next day.

Find the complete recipe for Roasted Butternut Squash and Red Onion Pasta Salad on The Duo Dishes.

B. Scott Review: Rihanna – Talk That Talk (Album)

Talk That Talk

Rihanna’s brand new studio album Talk That Talk is officially in stores. It looks to be another smash for Rihanna, because as I type this it’s sitting at the #1 position on iTunes in 20 different countries. I’ve spent some time with the deluxe edition of the album and I’m ready to give you love muffins my honest review!

So, how did Rih-Rih do on her sixth effort? Continue reading to find out…

1. “You Da One” – The second single, written by Ester Dean, is probably one of the most radio friendly records on the album. It’s considerably less raunchy than the other tracks and has an infectious melody that you just can’t help but singing. It’s a solid song, but for me it pales in comparison to some of the other tracks. 3/5

2. “Where Have You Been” – This song is one of, if not THE the standout track. While Calvin Harris’ production puts in a similar territory as “We Found Love”, “Where Have You Been” takes that territory and stomps all over it in 6-inch stilettos. It’s bigger, louder, and harder in every way. The song builds and builds until you’re completely engulfed heavy reverb and trance synths. 5/5/

3. “We Found Love” – The current radio smash. There’s isn’t much left to say about this song. I think its popularity says enough. 3.5/5

4. “Talk That Talk” – The title track opens up with nearly a minute long verse from Jay-Z, which is cool. The beat reminds me of Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” mixed with Rih’s own “What’s My Name”. The best part of the song comes around the 2 minute mark when the song takes on an island-inspired breakdown. 3/5

5. “Cockiness (I Love It)” – It’s probably the most unique song on the entire album. Bangladesh gave us his signature bass-heavy urban banger, while a sexually empowered Rihanna commands listeners to “suck my cockiness, lick my persuasion”. Be careful, because it’s super catchy and you’ll find yourself walking around chanting “I love it, I love it, I love it when you eat it” without even realizing it. 3/5 Read more »

B. Scott Bites: Mini Crab & Asparagus Quiche

Mini Crab & Asparagus Quiche - The Duo Dishes

I love to entertain and host festive gatherings for my friends and family any time I get a chance. I also love to attend parties! When you arrive at a party, love muffins, it’s always best to have an item in hand. If you want to save your favorite host with the most a little headache, it might be nice to take it a step further beyond the traditional bottle of wine. A bottle of wine is always appreciated, but so is a plate of food!

Appetizers are great and easy bring-alongs for any party. These mini quiche, full of sweet crab and crisp asparagus, are just as delicious from the oven as they are at room temperature–perfect for a cross town drive. Be the best guest at any of your upcoming holiday parties and bring a batch of these guys along. The full recipe for Mini Crab & Asparagus Quiche is on The Duo Dishes.

Mimi and yours truly holding Jill E. Beans.

As you know over the weekend, Mimi (Mariah Carey) and John Legend shot the music video to their soulful Christmas collabo ‘When Christmas Comes’ directed by Sanaa Hamri and guess what? I made a cameo appearance along with Randy Jackson (American Idol), Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy) AJ Calloway (Extra) and many more. The best part of the night for me was holding Monroe, she’s so precious and will always be my baby! Thank you Rokeal Lizama, Etienne Ortega and Ashley Sean Thomas for making me look all glamorous. Check out the exclusive behind the scenes photos we have for you below!

Yours truly.

Noah’s Arc Spin-off Not Happening

There has been much rumor and speculation throughout the last year that the hit television series Noah’s Arc could be possibly returning for a spin-off, but I have official confirmation that LOGO has decided NOT to proceed with the spin-off. Here’s creator/director Patrik Ian Polk’s official statement:

“I am sad to announce that after much careful consideration, Logo has decided not to move forward with the planned NOAH’S ARC series spin-off, but we remain committed to finding new ways to continue working together in the future. Meanwhile, you can look for my new film, “The Skinny” to make its television debut on Logo in the summer of 2012.”
